I was at a discussion group Tuesday night at a CHURCH that is run by a BAPTIST MINISTER and includes mostly MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH. Here is the theory they discussed…

Scientists hace discovered the building blocks of life in cosmic dust, and have concluded that this cosmic dust fell to earth and organized itself into, uh, the double-helix strand of DNA which became, uh, microbes, that evolved into, well, you know, everything.

This is a wonderful scientific theory that will doubtless garner a loyal following among those who wish to believe that everything evolved and organized itself and grew and changed and adapted and spread and became the marvelous diversity of life that we live among from this magic dust from outer space.

Agnostics might be intellectuals. Christians may be deluded. Heck, I might be all wrong. But I cannot wrap my mind around any theory that excludes the possibility of a Creator. And atheists, well, they can call themselves intellectuals, whatever.Just go on believing that life, in all its diversity, created itself from magic dust from outer space.

Let's say that you have a good cut that shows some kind of layers of rock. You don't see anything but horizontal layer upon horizontal layer.

Assume that they are proper for radiometric dating, and you start at the bottom. It's old. You keep dating upward, every layer, and it gets predictably younger and younger. Then, suddenly… the rocks start getting older again, even though they don't look like anything strange has happened.

You check and recheck, and that's what's right. Now you know that something strange has happened. Either folding or some kind of reverse faulting that put older strata over a younger sequence. You may not be able to determine from that immediate area what it was that happened to create this, but it tells you that you should start looking for the something that made it happen.

All radiometric dating works on the same theory, but how accurate it is depends on the age of the object being dated and the exact method being used.

Many elements have radioactive isotopes (versions of the same element with extra particles) that decay over time, releasing those extra particles. The rate at which the isotope decays is expressed as its half-life. For example, carbon-14 has a half-life of 5400 years, which means if you had a lump of carbon-14, 5400 years from now it would be half carbon-14 and half carbon-13 (regular carbon).

We make use of this to try to determine when something was formed. We know that you have a certain amount of carbon-14 in you right now, just like all organisms. I think it's something like 3% of the carbon in your body. So if someone finds your preserved body 10,000 years from now, that should be down to just under 1%, and he should be able to determine that you died about 10,000 years ago.

That's no good for things that are supposed to have died 100,000,000 years ago, though. You need something with a much longer half-life. But there are many other isotopes with useful decays that can be used. Uranium decays into lead. Potassium decays into argon, and so on.
